Little Fingers Carrots

Little Fingers Carrots are one of the quickest to grow. They have 4 inch cylindrical roots, and they a tender and sweet variety. Many can be grown in a small space.

Carrots in general are sun loving plants but they also like the cold, and these tasty little tid bits are no different.

Just keep them consistently watered and they will be happy.

Carrots are an unusual cool-season crop, half hardy to frost and light freezes.

How To Plant Carrots

  1. Sow seeds even in a very shallow furrow, about 1/4 inch deep, and keep seeds moist, so they will germinate. Seeds can also be planted in a pot, or in a window sill box.
  2. Thin carrots when they are established well enough.
  3. Pull carrots when they are finished. They will mature in about 55 days.

WHEN TO PLANT CARROTS

Carrots can be sown anytime from early Spring right through to late August, and can be harvested almost all year round. Most varieties are sown outdoors between April and July.

Carrots prefer full sun and cool soil. In a raised bed, neighboring plants will help shade the soil and keep it from getting too hot.

They can also be planted in a pot that is at least 6 inches deep and kept outside or kept in a sunny window sill.

4 PLANTS TO AVOID GROWING WITH CARROTS

  • Dill – Dill produces compounds that are harmful to carrots and can stunt their growth and development.
  • Fennel – Fennel is harmful to many plants including carrots.
  • Parsnips – Though parsnips don’t harm carrots directly, they are susceptible to the same diseases as carrots.
  • Celery – Attracts carrot fly and should not be planted near carrots.
  • Parsley – Also attracts carrot fly, and should not be planted near carrots.

WHAT ARE GOOD COMPANION PLANTS FOR CARROTS

Lettuce, onions, sage, and leeks are good companion plants for carrots.

WHAT IS CARROT FLY AND WHAT IS ITS SYMPTOMS

Some of the best-known companion plants for carrots are onions, green onions, lettuce, tomatoes and marigolds. Carrots pair well with compaion plants that have a strong fragrance (to repel pests and rodents and complement them in regards to space and timing.

The carrot fly is a pest of gardens and farms, and mainly affects the crop of carrots, but can also attack parsnips, parsley and celery.

The main symptoms, are rusty brown tunnels in the tap roots

For control of Carrot Rott Fly larvae apply carrot Root Fly Killer, which contains microscopic nematodes that can be watered into soil and raised beds.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE CARROTS TO GERMINATE

Because carrot seeds require 14 to 21 days to sprout, many gardeners mix a few radish seeds which sprout quickly , with the carrots seeds to mark the row.

Cover the seeds lightly.

Carrots grow best in cool temperatures of early spring and late fall.
