I have looked for unique and different things to grow, and plant. I have found many things that I can plant in containers on my patio, and I have developed an interest in growing rare seeds and plants that originated in all parts of the world.

CONTAINER GARDENING AT ITS FINEST

Treasure Island sweet potatoes are so beautiful to look at with their exquisite purple maple leaf foliage, that is also edible and tastes a lot like spinach.

The tubulars that grow, have orange skin, and orange flesh roots.

At seasons end, you get a harvest of robust, perfectly edible, deep orange sweet potatoes. They are a true super food, that are rich in vitamins, beta carotene and other antioxidants not to mention fiber.

HOW TO PLANT YOUR SWEET POTATOES

Plant your sweet potatoes as soon as you receive the bare roots or “slips” in the Spring, after all danger of frost is passed.

Choose a sunny location with loose, easily worked well drained soil, (sweet potatoes prefer a soil of 5.5 to 6.5 ph.

Ideal time to plant is late afternoon after the hottest time of day on a day that is not too windy.

When planting the plants in containers, do not cover the stem, cover the roots and firm the soil around them. Water lightly.

When in danger of frost, cover the container.

STORAGE OF TREASURE ISLAND SWEET POTATOES

Keeping harvested sweet potatoes cool, slows down the growth of disease organisms that will cause the tubers to spoil.

Warmer temperatures will also cause the tubers to spoil.

Forty-five degrees to fifty degrees is the sweet spot. However, if the temperature is too cold the starch in the potatoes will convert to sugar and turn the tubers black.

The minimum storage temperature is thirty five to forty degrees.
